THE PLOT: Write a summary (6 lines max.)
Charles and his group of friends, all unmarried, have reached an age at which your friends have decided to go marrying. In one of the ceremonies Charles meets Carrie, an American woman. Charles falls in love. But Carrie gets married with other man, and finally Charles, desperate, get married with an old ex-girlfriend. But the day of the wedding of Charles was happened unexpected thing.
What's your favourite scene/moment? Why?
For me the best moment was when, the day of Charles’ wedding, David (Charles’ deaf brother) said to him, in language of signs, that the truth is that he (Charles) doesn’t love Henrietta, the bride.
I like this scene because, despite being deaf, David has the courage to saying the truth to Charles before that he marries with the woman that he doesn’t love. THE CHARACTERS: Who are the main characters? Name, photo and description.
Hugh Grant is Charles: He’s a thirty age man, very good-looking. He’s a little confused. He falls in love with Carrie.
Andie MacDowell is Carrie: She’s an American woman, very interesting. I think she’s a little liar sometimes. She falls in love with Charles.
James Fleet is Tom: Fiona’s brother. He’s unmarried. He’s a very happy man but I think that he’s a little stupid too. His sister and he have a lot of money.
Simon Callow is Gareth: Matthews boyfriend. He’s very funny and he like jokes and parties. John Hannah is Matthew: He’s homosexual too, he’s Gareth’s boyfriend. He isn’t as fun as his boyfriend, is more serious.
Kristin Scott Thomas is Fiona: Tom’s sister. She’s very ironic woman. She loves Charles in secret.
David Bower is David: Charles’ deaf brother. He’s very attractive too. I think he’s as intelligent as his brother. Finally he falls in love with Serena, other girl.
Charlotte Coleman is Scarlett: Charles’s friend. She lives with Charles. She’s very extravagant and happy girl. Rowan Atkinson is Father Gerald: He’s a family friend. He’s learning to be priest.
Anna Chancellor is Henrietta (or Duckface): Is an ex-girlfriend of Charles. They are promised and she loves Charles.
Who's your favourite character?Why?
For me, the best character is David, because if he doesn’t say the truth the day of Charles’s wedding, Charles will be married with Henrietta.
CONCLUSION: PERSONAL OPINION
I think that this film is a good comedy if you want to laugh a little. Personally I like the performance of Hugh Grant. Also he has very understandable English. It’s perfect for improve your English.
I think it's a good comedy. There are very funny and ironic moments. I think the message of the film is that if you never get married, it isn’t the end of the world!

April Fool's Day!
CITY OF PHOENIX
ORAL PRESENTATION: CITY OF PHOENIX
I’m Judit Planas, I’m a student of Casa Nostra School and now I want to talk about Phoenix.
I chose this topic because this summer I will go, with Emma, Gemma, Noemi and Meritxell, three weeks in Phoenix. I think that it's good to know some general aspects of this town before to go.
Situation
Phoenix is the capital of the U.S. state of Arizona. Also is the biggest city in this state. It has an important metropolitan area. It’s an important city in U.S and in the world too.
Arizona border with California, Nevada, Utah and New Mexico.
(You can see this on the map)
Basic Characteristics
- Population: According to the 2000 census, there were 1,321,045 people in the city.
- Climate: I can say that Phoenix is a sunny city. Phoenix has more than 300 days of sunshine a year. In summer can reach 40 degrees. The maximum temperature is 50 degrees. (You can see this on the table).
-Language: English United States
-Money: The currency is the U.S. dollar, of course.
Attractions
In Phoenix there are a lot of big shopping centers. Also there are many swimming pools and artificial lakes because this city is situated in Arizona’s desert.
There are two important museums in the city:
- Rosson House Museum: It’s an area where you can see the original houses in Phoenix.
- Archaeological Museum, Pueblo Grande: You can see native rests.
And other places:
- South Mountain Park: Is the largest city park in the United States. Maybe in the world too. It has approximately 65.89 km2. You can do a lot of activities, for example cycling or walking.
-There are a lot of sport centres too.
In northern Arizona, not in Phoenix, there's the Grand Canyon, I think that is the more important place in Arizona. It’s a large and spectacular excavation of earth made for the Colorado River.
Curiosities
- Native Indians called the city "Hoodzo," their meaning are "warm place"
- A nickname of the city is: “Valley of the sun”.
About my oral presentation: CITY OF PHOENIX
In previous presentations I was very nervous and I told very fast and I not watched my public. I think that in this presentation, I spoke quickly, but not as much as in the previous one. Also I think that I correct a little bit all of this aspects.

Asking about Rules
Gemma: Excuse me.
Judit: Yes?
Gemma: I'm afraid you can't park your car there.Judit: Oh right, sorry. Where I allowed to park?

Judit: OK then. Thanks for your help!

Reporting an interview

Maria said that she was feeling very happy today because it's a sunny day. She’s happiest when her friends make her laugh, and she said that she coudn’t live without chocolate and her computer. She is angry or moody when her mother doesn’t understand her problems. If she could be anywhere in the world now, she would be in Hawaii because she thinks that it is a sunny place.
Maria has got a great memory and she remembers her first day at this school, she felt very nervous because she was very little. Also she remembers her last birthday. She remembers that she went to Italy on a school trip, Russia, France… The best holiday that she has ever had was in a cruise around the North Sea.
She’s usually positive about the future. I asked if the planet would be a better place in a hundred years, and she said that it probably wouldn’t, she thinks that it would be worse. She thinks that she wait be famous because she thinks that famous people are stupid. When she’s older, Maria likes to live in Italy because the gastronomy and the character of the people are good. She promises that, if she has money, she’ll help poor people in the future.
A diary entry
I think that my friend was wrong to steal a t-shirt and to lie about it. I think that if my friend and I didn’t lie about this, now we wouldn’t have any problems with this other girl in my class.
I’m not sure what will happen now. I think that this won’t happen again. My friend and I learned the lesson now but, if I were in this situation again, I’d tell the truth.

Oral presentation

The main topic of my oral presentation is the Carnival. I speak from origins of Carnival, Carnival in the world and the most typical costumes.
What is carnival?
Carnival is a festive which occurs immediately before Lent. The main events are usually during January and February. In my town, Banyoles, the carnival was 21 February .
Carnival typically involves a public celebration , masque and public street party. People often dress up or masquerade during the celebrations.
The origins of Carnival
Some historians say that the carnival is that 5000 years ago in time to Egyptians. But, in other hand, some people also said that the carnival comes from the time of the Roman Splendour, when, in honour of the god Bacchus (god of wine) was celebrating a party that lasted two or three days.
Carnival and Christianity
The Spanish origin of the word carnival comes from "carnelevale", referring to the prohibition of meat consumption in the Christian Lent. Because, during 40 days, for Christian people, it was prohibit eat meat. Currently, the carnival doesn’t follow any religious holiday.
CARNIVAL IN THE WORLD!
The carnival is celebrated almost around the world. Now, I appoint some of the world places where the carnival is an important event.
Carnival in Brazil
First I’d like to talk about the Carnival in Brazil, maybe the most important carnival in the world.
Brazil C
arnival is also celebrated 40 days before Lent. The main celebration takes place in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, where the samba schools and other groups of people dress up and go out into the streets. The Brazil Carnival is famous for his spectacular floats and dancers, singers and drummers parade that through the streets of Rio. Thousand of people meet there every year to enjoy this event.

The Carnival of Venice is the traditional party since XVII century, when the nobility were dress up to mix with the villagers. Since then, the masks are the most important element of the carnival. The carnival of Venice has duration of 10 days.
The costumes are basically composed by:
- Costumes typical of the 1700s.
- White mask and black silk hat.
The Venetian Carnival is very different from the Brazilian carnival. The Venetian Carnival is more classical.
The mask of the year The mask of U.S. President, Barack Obama, is the most sold in the city of Sao Paulo for Carnival 2009. More than 20,000 masks were sold.

EXPLAINING A PROBLEM
A letter: explaining a problem
What’s the situation?
My parents are too strict because I have to be at home before 9:30 p.m. at the weekends. I talked to them about it, but they won’t change the rule.
Are you worried or angry? Why?
I’m angry because I think is too early to come back at home at the weekends and I’d like to come back later
What is you ideal solution?
I think my parents should be more permissive with me and they should listen my arguments.
What would be consequences of that?
Maybe they won’t listen to me.
Is there another solution?
No, there isn’t any solution; I’d really like some advice.
Why do you need advice?
I’d like some advice because I want to change this situation.
I’ve had a problem recently. My parents are too strict because I have to be at home before 9:30 p.m. at the weekends. I think that is too early to come back home. I talked to them about it, but they won’t change the rule.
I’m angry because I think is too early to come back at home at the weekends and I’d like to come back later. I think my parents should be more permissive with me and if they allowed me to come back home later, I’d be much happier. But maybe they won’t listen to me.
I’d like some advice because I want to change this situation.

History, English and Maths with Gaudí
Antoni Gaudí i Cornet (25 June 1852 - 10 June 1926) was a Catalan architect , maximum representative of the modernist architecture. He has many important works, but undoubtedly the most important is the “Sagrada Família”, expiatory temple in construction.
In his works, for example “La Sagrada Família", we can see many things related to the mathematics, for example:
- Shapes: In all of his works Gaudí used the geometric shapes: polygons, parabola, helicoidally forms…
- Puzzle: magical Square of the part of the Passion.
- Proportions: the sizes of the “Sagrada Família” are correctly related and studied for mathematical methods.

A discussion essay
1. Is the Internet important, in your opinion? Why?
I think that the Internet is a very important invention because you can access a lot of information in a short time, serves to communicate with the people (e-mail…) and also serves to play computer games.
2. When did it become important?
Internet became important in 1969 when it was invented.
3. What did people do before his was invented?
Before Internet was invented, people went to the library to consult information; the computer games weren't existed and the relationships were more real, no virtual.

I think that books are a very important invention too. Books have advantages too. For example, you can read a book in everywhere, you can touch the book. But, on the other hand, I think that for find information, the Internet is more comfortable.
6. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the Internet?
I think that the advantages of the Internet are: you can access much information in a short time; you can communicate with people around the world (e-mail…) and also you can play computer games. And the disadvantages: you can’t use it everywhere; you need a computer for to use it …
7. On balance, which is the better invention? Why?
I think that the Internet is the better invention, because it is more comfortable and it has more applications than books.
Writing: The Internet is a better invention than books. Discuss.
The Internet was a very revolutionary invent in 1969, when it was invented. The Internet is a very important invention because you can access a lot of information in a short time. You can communicate with the people around the world (e-mail, messenger…) and is also used to play computer games. Before the Internet was invented, people went to the library to consult information; computer games didn't exist and the relationships were more real, not virtual.
Books, on the other hand, are a very important invention ,too. Books are simpler and you can read it everywhere, you can touch the book. I think that books are more personal object. But the Internet, however, is more useful.
On balance, I think that the Internet is a better invention, because it is more useful and it has more applications.

Sarah's chance at making love with Karl, following her company's Christmas party, is abandoned when her brother again calls her at the most inopportune time. Karl suggests that she not answer , but she does so anyway, effectively ending their relationship. On Christmas Eve, she wishes Karl "Merry Christmas" as he leaves the office, and it is clear he wants to say something to her, but he departs and she breaks down in tears before picking up her phone to ring her brother. She is seen spending Christmas in her brother's institution, wrapping a scarf around him. They are the only couple not seen at the end of the movie at the airport.
Colin, Tony and the Wisconsin girls
Colin thinks that London won’t find your girl. He explains his problem to his friend Tony, and he’s going to USA to look for his girl.
John and Judy
In a story that was excised completely from the censored version of the DVD release of the film, John and Judy , who up to this point were unknown to each other, work as stand-ins for the sex scenes in a movie. Colin's friend Tony is part of the film crew, and gives them directions as to the activities they should simulate so that lighting checks and such can be completed before the actors are called to the set. Despite their blatantly sexual actions, and frequent nudity, they are very naturally comfortable with each other, discussing politics, traffic, and previous jobs as if they'd known one another for years. The two carefully and cautiously pursue a relationship, and see the play at the local school together with John's brother. In the finale at the airport, Tony, while waiting for Colin, runs into John and Judy, about to depart on a trip together. Judy happily displays an engagement ring on her finger.

Daniel and Sam
Daniel: So what's the problem, Sammy? Is it just Mum or is it something else? Maybe... school - are you being bullied? Or is it something worse? Can you give me any clues at all?
Sam: You really want to know?
Daniel: I really want to know.
Sam: Even though you won't be able to do anything to help?
Daniel: Even if that's the case, yeah.
Sam: OK. The truth is actually... I'm in love.
Daniel: Sorry?
Sam: I know I should be thinking about Mum all the time, and I am. But the truth is I'm in love and I was before she died, and there's nothing I can do about it.
Daniel: Aren't you a bit young to be in love?
Sam: No.
Daniel: Oh, OK, right. Well, I'm a little relieved.
Sam: Why?
Daniel: Well, you know - I thought it might be something worse.
Sam: Worse than the total agony of being in love?
Daniel: Oh. No, you're right. Yeah, total agony.
