CITY OF PHOENIX

ORAL PRESENTATION: CITY OF PHOENIX

I’m Judit Planas, I’m a student of Casa Nostra School and now I want to talk about Phoenix.
I chose this topic because this summer I will go, with Emma, Gemma, Noemi and Meritxell, three weeks in Phoenix. I think that it's good to know some general aspects of this town before to go.

Situation
Phoenix is the capital of the U.S. state of Arizona. Also is the biggest city in this state. It has an important metropolitan area. It’s an important city in U.S and in the world too.

Arizona border with California, Nevada, Utah and New Mexico.
(You can see this on the map)

Basic Characteristics

- Population: According to the 2000 census, there were 1,321,045 people in the city.

- Climate: I can say that Phoenix is a sunny city. Phoenix has more than 300 days of sunshine a year. In summer can reach 40 degrees. The maximum temperature is 50 degrees. (You can see this on the table).

-Language: English United States

-Money: The currency is the U.S. dollar, of course.

Attractions

In Phoenix there are a lot of big shopping centers. Also there are many swimming pools and artificial lakes because this city is situated in Arizona’s desert.

There are two important museums in the city:

- Rosson House Museum: It’s an area where you can see the original houses in Phoenix.
- Archaeological Museum, Pueblo Grande: You can see native rests.

And other places:

- South Mountain Park: Is the largest city park in the United States. Maybe in the world too. It has approximately 65.89 km2. You can do a lot of activities, for example cycling or walking.
-There are a lot of sport centres too.

In northern Arizona, not in Phoenix, there's the Grand Canyon, I think that is the more important place in Arizona. It’s a large and spectacular excavation of earth made for the Colorado River.

Curiosities

- Native Indians called the city "Hoodzo," their meaning are "warm place"
- A nickname of the city is: “Valley of the sun”.

About my oral presentation: CITY OF PHOENIX
In previous presentations I was very nervous and I told very fast and I not watched my public. I think that in this presentation, I spoke quickly, but not as much as in the previous one. Also I think that I correct a little bit all of this aspects.

Well, now we talk about the enjoyable trip in Italy. This is a popular trip in the school and is the last travel that we do together. For this reason is a special travel for us.

The first day:
We wake up at 3 o’clock morning. We arrived at 4 at school because the bus left at this hour. When we arrived in Girona airport everybody went to the self service, then some people slept. After a one hour we arrived in Bergamo airport. Outside the airport there was a bus called Antoniatzi.

After one hour in the bus we arrived in Milano, unfortunately it was raining a little bit.

Then we surprised when we saw the fantastic duomo. And everybody take photos. We went to inside of duomo, it was so dark. Then we rising roof. Some people we lost in the roof but finally we found the rest of the class. We think that the roof is beautiful.

We went to the Victorio Emanuele in this gallery there are a lot of shops: Prada, Luis Vuitton, Victorio I Luccion, Gucci and a very big and glamorous McDonals. We ate Murfins of chocolate. We went to the museum of the scala di Milano. After ate in a very stressful restaurant we went to shopping in the center. After this we catch the bus and we arrived in hotel.

The second day:
We went to Verona and in il lago di Garda. In the mornig we saw the Juliet’s house it was very old. Sirmione was the most beautiful place that we visited during the day. It was like Besalú. In Sirmione we eat a delicious pizza.

The third day:

It was the sunniest day of the trip, and also it was the Julia’s birthday. We went to Venezia all the day. We arrive to Venezia with vaporetto-Taxi. We think that Venezia is the city of love and where you are in this city you felt like in a story, it’s a magical city. We went to Sant Marco piazza, we visited the church, and we saw a man doing figures of glass from Murano. Then we have all the time free. And in the night we go to the disco of the hotel. It was very funny!

Before the disco, we gave the surprise present to Julia. It was a very tender moment.

The fourth day and five day:

These days we stay in Firenze. First we visited the fantastic cathedral and then we have all the time free. We walked for the city center; we bought some presents for the family… it was a great time.

*I remember that, in a bar, the owners charged from us two Euros more for eating the ice cream inside the bar.

Finally we went to the Hotel Cordova. It was very strange hotel! It was situate in a second floor of flat. And the decoration was terrible! It was like to terror house.

Last day that we were in Firenze, we visited Uffizi Gallery and the Science Museum.

Last day:

We went to Pisa, we think that was good but no the most beautiful thing that we saw. The day was a little strange because it was the last and anybody can’t come to Banyoles again. After saw the tower we went to the restaurant very early then we went to the airport, it was very hot. After an hour we arrived in Girona we did the last photo and we catch the bus for the last time. It was an unforgettable trip.

Oral presentation

CARNIVAL!
The main topic of my oral presentation is the Carnival. I speak from origins of Carnival, Carnival in the world and the most typical costumes.

What is carnival?
Carnival is a festive which
occurs immediately before Lent. The main events are usually during January and February. In my town, Banyoles, the carnival was 21 February .

Carnival typically involves a public celebration , masque and public street party. People often dress up or masquerade during the celebrations.

The origins of Carnival
Some historians say that the carnival is that 5000 years ago in time to Egyptians. But, in other hand, some people also said that the carnival comes from the time of the Roman Splendour, when, in honour of the god Bacchus (god of wine) was celebrating a party that lasted two or three days.

Carnival and Christianity
The Spanish origin of the word carnival comes from "carnelevale", referring to the prohibition of meat consumption in the Christian Lent. Because, during 40 days, for Christian people, it was prohibit eat meat. Currently, the carnival doesn’t follow any religious holiday.

CARNIVAL IN THE WORLD!
The carnival is celebrated almost around the world. Now, I appoint some of the world places where the carnival is an important event.

Carnival in Brazil
First I’d like to talk about the Carnival in Brazil, maybe the most important carnival in the world.
Brazil Carnival is also celebrated 40 days before Lent.
The main celebration takes place in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, where the samba schools and other groups of people dress up and go out into the streets. The Brazil Carnival is famous for his spectacular floats and dancers, singers and drummers parade that through the streets of Rio. Thousand of people meet there every year to enjoy this event.

Carnival in Venice
The Carnival of Venice is the traditional party since XVII century, when the nobility were dress up to mix with the villagers. Since then, the masks are the most important element of the carnival. The carnival of Venice has duration of 10 days.
The costumes are basically composed by:

- Costumes typical of the 1700s.
- White mask and black silk hat.

The Venetian Carnival is very different from the Brazilian carnival. The Venetian Carnival is more classical.

Carnival in Cadiz
The Carnival of Cadiz is the most famous in Spain and is also recognized around the world. The origin of the Carnival of Cadiz comes from the Roman period.
The Carnival of Cadiz is characterized by choral groups, their different actions, their competitions for the best choral group…

Curiosities

The mask of the year
The mask of U.S. President, Barack Obama, is the most sold in the city of Sao Paulo for Carnival 2009. More than 20,000 masks were sold.
